Robert Adams and Mark Klett

As you can see, the first five photographs were shot by Robert Adams, and the next three images were shot by Mark Klett. There are lots of similarities between them .All of these photographs are black-and-white, and they show the landscapes of the American West. They are pictures based on the real world and our souls, though the photographs, we can see that all these photos focus on the wilderness preserves and try to eliminate the signs of human presence. Their images represent the frontier between the human and natural worlds, showing us that human destruction has affected seriously to the land. Furthermore, both of their work represents a position of hope, refusing to abandon the belief that individuals can still respond to traditional images in fresh, individual ways.

They take photographs in the most self-effacing ways. They hope people are able to understand how important our nature is; therefore, their work seeks to ask us to notice the remarkable gifts we've been given, to see the mess we've made of them, to consider the serious result will be generated, then to stop the destruction on our landscape as nature landscape is so significant for human living, once it has been destroyed or polluted, it is hard to restore. Looking the photos above, we can see that advocate to pretect our nature landscape becomes one of the missions for Robert Adams and Mark Klett. Without a doubt, it is not a simple set of requests, and Adams and Klett also knows that he may suffer some criticism or defensiveness by asking such questions directly; therefore, Adams and Klett apply a visual and tactful way to spread the ideas for us modestly.

Both Robert Adams' and Mark Klett's pictures are not designed to be overtly political, but they are capable of reorganizing the way we perceive the world, photographs are the tools for them to express their feelings about photography. Obviously, Robert Adams and Mark Klett are good and special photographers, and I feel that their photographs are really wonderful, it contains lots of imformation within them, we can recognize the effect that we made on our landscape after viewing these photos, and we may aware that we are responsible to stop destroying our nature landscape; on the contrary, we should try our best to pretect it.

Viewing the phots above, we can find out that Adams' photos influenced Klett a lot, they both focused on the American landscape, but Adams is the one who contributed on shotting the landscape of the American earlier than Klett, and we know that most of Klett's documentary photographs reveal the diversity of the land of the Southwestern United States, in addition, their capture objects and angle are similar; moreover, both of them express the same statement through their images: ask people prevent the nature landscape from being destroyed. However, Mark Klett's photographs get some development by comparing to Adams', they are more innovative than Adams', his photos refered to the idea about time, for example, the "second view" and the "third view" that were shot by Klett, they displayed how the scene changed as the time pass on. In short, Mark Klett's photographs contain some features from Robert Adams, and he adds some other special factors by himself, we can say that Klett's photographs are extensions of Adams', so their photos look similar but a little bit different.

Alterations in journalistic photography

Journalistic photography is a special tool to help journalists to tell news stories. It is not ethical or acceptable to alter press photographs even the photos that have been modified will become more aesthetic. The prime responsibility for a photojournalist is to disclose the real information to the public. A photojournalist is not permitted to conceal or change the content during the postprocessing, except the colour, journalistic photography must based on the actual and reliable fact and events. With the development of the digital technology, photographs can be altered easily, but there are some negative impacts of photo alterations on journalistic photography. Firstly, once a press photo is altered, its news value will be greatly reduced, or even disappear completely. Press photographs are important proofs for news events, they represent a fact at a special moment, so they have to keep their original looks; otherwise, audiences can not realize weather the photos are reliable or not. Secondly, audiences may be misled while they are looking the photograph that has been modified. It seems that the photographers are lying to audiences by publishing the altered photos. As a photojournalist, he or she is responsible to let audiences know the truth, and it is not allowed to alter the press photographs randomly, which is against the code of ethics. For example, if a photo that shows the scene in the battlefield has been altered or added some desirable features, it will affect a lot, audience can not recognize the real situation at that moment. In short, i insist that press photos are not acceptable to alter.

These two photos show how Reddicliffe looks before and after being altered. Compared to the original photo that lies on the left, the right one shows that Reddicliffe's teeth has been yellowed, dark circles have been added under his eyes; also, his hairline has been moved back. After these alternations, the appearance of Reddicliffe has been changed.

I learned something about press photography and art photography after I read some articles. On one hand, they have the same function, no matter press photo or art photo is a useful memory tool, they can record anything that you want to remember, for exempt, if you do not want to forget a person, you can take a photo for him, or when you want to remain the happy moment, you can also take a photo, this is an easy and useful way. What’s more, both good press photographs and art photographs are visual languages, they can tell stories or events to readers.
On the other hand, press photography and art photography have some differences. Firstly, timeliness is an essential feature for press photography. Press photography is required to spread information to readers at the first time; otherwise, the value of photographs will reduce greatly. However, art photography does not have such a feature. Next, they have different subject choice. Press photography emphasis on news value, anything that relate to and important news could be an object for photographers, for instance, the state president attend a meeting or somewhere suffer a grievous disaster is worth enough to be shot. For example, the one that I posted above shot by Lu Guang shows the extremely poor living condition still exists in some area. Nonetheless, art photography pays more attention to sense of beauty. Art photography should fuse the author’s own ideas or feelings to his or her works, such as unfairness, dissatisfaction or complaint. Kertesz said “My work is inspired by my life. I express myself through my photographs. Everything that surrounds me provokes my feeling.” Therefore, no matter trees, lakes hills or buildings may be objects for art photographers. In addition, press photography and art photography use different methods to express their works. Most of press photography is easy to understand because it just represents the real scenes to the life, and it is not permit to process or modify manually, except the colour, so when readers look at the photos, they can get the real information directly. Nevertheless, art photography may use a more implied way to explain the subjects; it provides rich imagination space to readers. In order to study art photography, people have to display their imagination and esthetic ability. Unlike press photography, arts always contain deeper meanings. Also, photographers can modify the photos based on their favours.
In short, there are both similarities and differences between press photography and art photography.

Edit a photo

I was using Adobe Photoshop CS5 to edit my photo ,base on its’ essential functions,I was thinking to combine some photos together and make some changes as well. My concept is make it looks more than real, which means I will manipulate it looks like a living photo shooting by myself instead of a fixed perfect picture, meanwhile, I would like my photo to be unique, and I hope people will feel touching after looking my photo. Firstly, I found two original pictures about beach on line, the one which shows some trees will become the background, and the second one shows a heart is my other material, I would insert the heart into the first picture, then I would like to copy one more beside it in order to make it feels more romantic, the beach is filling with love at this time. Next, I put my friend’s photo that I took one year ago in it as well, it seems they are holding the wedding party on the beach, they are standing in front of the hearts and turning around to look at it, and they are surprised and pleasure at this time. Without a doubt, many people think church should be a first choice to hold a wedding party because they think marriage is a sacred event. However, the reason I choose to put these three photos together is because beach is a comfortable and romantic place for lovers, the silver sand and blue water always make people feel relax. In addition, wedding party is a significant event for couples; they want to have a sweet and meaningful memory at their special moment. Compare to the traditional custom, whatever the couples prefer is more important, so the beach is more suitable to be the background What’s more, I change the brightness and colour, comparing to the originals’, the edited one shows much darker, and the colour turns to red. Generally, people will hold their wedding party with their families and friends in the morning, but back to my concept, I would like to build a special and romantic scene, basically, from my point of view, the caliginous colour of sky represent a romantic feeling. Furthermore, after the photo changes to darker, viewers will probably pay much more attention to the new couple other than these beautiful surroundings. In addition, I change the background colour to red because I believe the colour of red stands for good luck; it may bring happiness to new couples. Base on these points, I adjust the brightness and the colour to become darker. Finally, I hope the photo can show the effect of the evening, that is why I have to remove the light clouds. So far, I have finished editing, and I hope you will like it.

The role of portraits in the early days of photography and portraits today

The main similarity of portraints in the early days of photography and portraits today is to record a significant and pleasant moment for people. People are likely to take a photo with their families and friends in a special day, for example, most of people will take a lot of photos during their wedding party, birthday party or graduation ceremony. Sometimes, when we are traveling to a new city, we will probably take some photos to record it, or when we see an imposing building, a beautiful lady or a great scenery, we want to take photos with them, it doesn't change no matter in the early days or today.
As time goes on, current photographs change a lot from the early days'. Quality and clarity of photographs are most obvious. In the past, because of the elementary equipment, the colour of photos can just show black and white, moreover, comparing to the photographs in today, it is more difficult to catch the details in the past photos since the graininess. In addiction, taking photos is not provided for everybody in the past, most of people can not support the high price for a photo.
Today, with the development of technology, photographs are growing as well, taking photos are becoming a common entertainment. Most of people are using digital cameras now, so people are able to check their photos once they are taken, sometimes, if they are not so satisfied with the photos, they can just delet them immediately or they can fix the flaws after that. Because the price of cameras become much lower, many people have their own cameras now, so they are able to take photos whenever they want.
Though portraits in the early days of photography and portraits today have many differences, they contain a few similarities in some ways.

Black-and White

This is a historical photo, though it is black-and-white , it looks nice. The photo shows a whole family were traveling and sightseeing in outside, they were sitting on the wooden car, all of them were dressing gorgeous, showing a peace and pleasant smile. Four horses were tied by strings, and they were walking and pulling in front of the people. Old photographs always can reappear the unique view of our past, they can record a significant moment in the past.

raining outside

The left picture tells us a little girl staying in front of the window and watching the raining outside. While the rain droping down on the road and the window, it cleans the dust away; also, it may realease people's stress, purify our mind. Through the left one, the girl seems relaxed and comfortable when she watching the rain, listening the pitter-pitter and being absorbed in meditation. For the right one, the photo is taken by Ingz, it shows the rain stays on the leaves of the flower, it looks like that the rain is part of the plant because they are combining together perfectly. Raining is beautiful, both outdoor and our heart become clearer after raining.
